How Strong is a 12mm Acrylic Sheet?

As a manufacturer specializing in acrylic sheets, we often get asked about the strength and durability of acrylic materials. A 12mm acrylic sheet offers a balance of high impact resistance, rigidity, and long-term durability, making it suitable for various applications.

1. Strength and Load Capacity

  • Impact Resistance: Acrylic is 17 times stronger than glass, meaning it is much less likely to break under force. If it does break, it fractures into larger, blunt pieces rather than sharp shards like glass.
  • Flexural Strength: A 12mm acrylic sheet has a flexural strength of around 105 MPa, which allows it to bear a reasonable load without significant bending. However, for heavy loads or large unsupported spans, additional support is recommended.
  • Tensile Strength: With a tensile strength of 72 MPa, it can withstand stretching and pulling forces without breaking easily.

2. Durability in Different Conditions

  • Weather Resistance: Unlike some plastics, acrylic does not become brittle under UV exposure. It maintains clarity and strength for years in outdoor environments.
  • Heat Resistance: The softening point is 113°C, meaning it can handle moderate heat, but prolonged exposure to high temperatures may cause deformation.
  • Water Resistance: Acrylic absorbs very little moisture (only about 0.3% over 24 hours), so it does not swell or degrade in humid conditions.

3. Common Uses of 12mm Acrylic Sheets

Due to its strength, clarity, and weather resistance, 12mm acrylic sheets are widely used in:

  • Protective barriers (such as sneeze guards and machine covers)
  • Architectural glazing (for windows, partitions, and skylights)
  • Display cases and retail shelving
  • Aquariums and water tanks (due to their ability to handle water pressure while remaining transparent)
  • Industrial and mechanical applications that require a durable, lightweight material

4. Things to Consider

While 12mm acrylic is strong, it is still a thermoplastic, meaning excessive force or improper installation can cause bending or stress fractures. If higher impact resistance is needed, polycarbonate (PC) sheets might be a better alternative. Additionally, acrylic is rigid but not flexible, so if flexibility is required, a thinner sheet or a different material may be more suitable.

As a factory with extensive experience in acrylic sheet production, we always recommend selecting the right thickness and installation method based on your specific needs. If you're unsure whether 12mm acrylic is the best choice for your project, consulting with a material expert can help ensure the best results.
