Acrylic or Plexiglass – Clearing the Confusion Once and for All

If you’ve ever shopped for clear plastic sheets—online or at a hardware store—you’ve probably seen two common terms: acrylic and Plexiglass. This often leads to confusion. Are they the same thing? Is one better than the other?

Let’s clear things up once and for all.

Plexiglass is not a different material—it’s simply a brand name for acrylic. Both products are made from the same base compound: polymethyl methacrylate, or PMMA. This is the same kind of name-brand confusion you see with other products—for example, many people say "Band-Aid" to refer to any adhesive bandage, even though Band-Aid is just one brand.

So, when you see a sheet labeled "Plexiglass," you're really just looking at branded acrylic. The material properties are virtually identical. What differs is usually the price. Branded acrylic sheets can cost significantly more than unbranded ones, despite offering the same level of clarity, strength, and durability.

When choosing between them, it’s smart to ignore the name and focus on what really matters to your project:

  • Thickness

  • Light transmission

  • UV resistance

  • Impact strength

Whether you're building a display case, crafting protective barriers, or designing decorative panels, unbranded acrylic performs just as well—and often at a lower cost.

In summary: Plexiglass is acrylic. Acrylic is Plexiglass. They are the same material sold under different names. The smartest choice? Pick the one that meets your needs and fits your budget.
